Reimagining the Pasture

At Stardust Sanctuary, we believe that every inch of space should reflect the love and care our animals deserve. This summer, we’ve embarked on a big, beautiful project: renovating our pasture to become a multisensory environment that supports the well-being, enrichment, and natural expression of our beloved herd.

Thanks to a generous $2,000 contribution from the Diablo Equestrian Heritage Association (DEHA), we’re one step closer to that dream. Their support is helping us purchase round pen panels that will form the foundation of a safe, flexible space for movement, rest, and healing. We are so grateful for their partnership and belief in this vision.

We’ve also been able to source sand for the footing—and the incredible humans who lease us this land are lending their time and equipment to help till, grade, and install it. But before the sand goes in, we need to create a strong foundation with drain rock or rock dust, ensuring the space holds up to the elements and stays comfortable year-round. We're also planning to enclose the base of the round pen with wood or rubber matting to prevent the sand from escaping, keeping the area safe and contained.

But the plans don’t stop there.

We’re dreaming of permanent shade structures, which will offer crucial relief during hot days. Each metal post for these structures costs around $200, and we need several to bring this vision to life. We’ll also be planting trees, creating hay and fodder boxes for enrichment, and designing a space that allows our animals to feel seen, soothed, and free to be exactly who they are.

This isn’t just about a pasture—it’s about curating an environment that honors the magic, needs, and personalities of the animals who call Stardust home.
